Directions: In the table below, differentiate the types of care needed for the family members identified who have lost a (Child/Spouse/Father). Include three to four scholarly references to support your responses.

There is no scenario or scenarios to work off of.  Thus, you have the freedom to choose your approach.  For example, choose a stage of grief that the mother of a deceased person might be going through.  Provide a brief description of the loss. Describe the stage in detail.  How might this stage of grief impact other family members?  Give one or two examples. Finally, provide a discussion on the care intervention appropriate to the stage of grief.  Use this approach for each of the bereaved individuals.  There is a lot of flexibility and even creativity in this assignment.

Finally, try not to use the same stage of grief for each person.  Choose a different one for each and for a more well-rounded analysis.

Provide the following information in each column of the worksheet for each family member:

  1. Grief stage each individual is experiencing. (Column 2)
  2. Identify at least two thoughts on how this stage impacts each family member. (Column 3)
  3. Identify and describe at least three types of care interventions that are needed for each family member. (Column 4)

Part 2: Family Grief Care Interventions Essay

Following the completion of the Family Grief Worksheet, write a 500-750-word paper on what approach the professional should take in communicating and utilizing the identified care interventions with each family member.

Discuss how the tasks of grieving within a family unit is different than that of an individual.

Provide at least three scholarly references to support your writing.

Viewing Your Topic From an Ecological Perspective

All theories offer insight about the cause of any given problem, but practitioners and researchers must determine the most appropriate one. They ask themselves, “Is the selected theory the most suitable?” and “Do the key constructs of the theory align with the analysis?” To answer the first question, one needs to be familiar with the assumptions of theory and understand the merits and limitations in applying the theory to the issue. To answer the second, one needs to understand the concept of alignment.

Alignment refers to logical flow and consistency in the argument from start to finish. For example, if a social worker says that they are using Freudian theory, then the interventions used would reflect Freud’s major tenets about the role of the unconscious on human behavior. If, suddenly, the social worker uses positive reinforcement, the intervention is not aligned or not consistent with the theory. You will see the term alignment referred to multiple times in this course and throughout your doctoral journey. This will be the case when you take your research courses and when you work on your PhD dissertation or DSW capstone project.

In this Assignment, you evaluate alignment within a research study. As you read the Cho, Hong, and Logan article, notice how the authors attempt to align the various factors correlated with the phenomena of stalking to the different levels identified in ecological theory.


Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • In 2–3 sentences, summarize the assumptions of ecological theory.
  • Using the Cho et al. article, focus on the authors’ analysis of the factors (variables) identified for each of the four levels (individual, interpersonal, societal, and cultural). Explain the extent to which the factors or variables identified for each of the levels align with ecological theory.
  • In 2–3 sentences, identify one of the social work practice recommendations the authors highlighted. Evaluate the extent to which the recommendation is aligned to the assumptions of ecological theory.
  • Now, transitioning to your potential doctoral capstone topic, identify your topic in one sentence.
  • In 2–3 sentences, explain how ecological theory would conceptualize your topic.
  • Identify one potential factor or variable for each of the system levels (micro-, meso-, exo-, macro-, and chrono-) of ecological theory as it applies to your topic. Use literature to ground your claims for each factor or variable for each of the systems levels.
  • Describe how findings from your study could influence social change at the different system levels of ecological theory.

Refining the Problem Statement

Somerville et al. (2017) state that fentanyl is one of the leading causes of opioid-related deaths in the United States. An opioid death was recorded every 8 minutes in 2016 alone. The problem continues to worsen as the number of recorded deaths continues to soar. This is because fentanyl is a more potent pain reliever than morphine, thereby increasing the affinity for addiction. Its heroin-like effect creates sensations of happiness to mask any emotional distress. Addicts would tend to buy the drugs from the streets, thereby putting more pressure on drug enforcement agencies. As a result, the American government declared the crisis a public health emergency. Therefore, addressing the problem would require effective strategies that address the various needs of the affected individuals.

Difference Between Epistemological Paradigm and Theory

Whether working with clients, families, communities, organizations, or advocacy on government levels, the knowledge underlying the work social workers do—every assessment, intervention, or policy—is grounded on epistemological underpinnings. Furthermore, the work social workers do is also supported by a theoretical framework. Think of the epistemological paradigm as answering the question “How will the social work topic or problem be studied?” Meanwhile, think of theory as a structure to hold up a research study or social work practice intervention. When a study or social work intervention is supported by theory, it offers the chance for the researcher or social worker to connect the study or intervention to a larger knowledge base.

You might be wondering how practitioners and researchers know which theory to use. Lor, Backonja, and Lauver (2017) described three criteria for selecting a theory. First, think about the topic or problem and which theories contain the concepts and propositions that capture the nature of that topic or problem. Second, identify all potential theories that may be viable to provide the structure of the study, and explain the nature of the problem. Finally, ask which theory is the clearest and has the most empirical support for the topic or problem. Lor et al. stressed that the manner of determining the most appropriate theory is an iterative process. When you start work on your doctoral capstone, compare the different theories. Then, visit the library to find articles that describe interventions, policies, and research studies that have used similar theories.
