Analyze the group dynamics – How does the group communicate? How are decisions made? Who evaluates group members’ performance?

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 7,8
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 2 scholarly sources in addition to textbook and lesson.

Instructions
While our focus in the lesson this week was on the concepts of conformity and obedience, we also studied group processes and dynamics in our readings for the week. For this assignment, select two specific groups to which you personally belong. This could be a church group, sports team, club, department at work, etc. In a slide presentation, address the following for each of the groups you selected:

  • Describe the group (membership, purpose, etc.).
  • Define the group roles, emphasizing your own role in that group.
  • Describe the group norms.
  • Analyze the group dynamics – How does the group communicate? How are decisions made? Who evaluates group members’ performance?
  • Evaluate how dissension or conflict are managed within the group.
  • Select two social psychology group concepts (for example: cohesion, groupthink, social loafing) and apply them to these two groups, comparing and contrasting how the group norms and dynamics impact how the group behaves.

Writing Requirements (APA format)
As you complete your presentation, be sure to:

  • Use speaker’s notes to expand upon the bullet point main ideas on your slides, making references to research and theory with citation.
  • Proof your work
  • Use visuals (pictures, video, narration, graphs, etc.) to complement the text in your presentation and to reinforce your content.
  • Do not just write a paper and copy chunks of it into each slide. Treat this as if you were going to give this presentation live to a group of middle school kids – be relevant, engaging, and focused.

Presentation Requirements (APA format)

  • Length: 8-10 slides (not including title, introduction, and references slides)
  • Font should not be smaller than size 16-point
  • Parenthetical in-text citations included and formatted in APA style
  • References slide (a minimum of 2 outside scholarly sources plus the textbook and/or the weekly lesson for each course outcome)
  • Title and introduction slide required

We have all mentioned in this week and prior weeks discussion that cost of care is not always affordable whether you do or do not have insurance. In thinking about the implementation of the ACA, if insurance coverage was not obtained then financial penalty ensued. So basically (in my area) if you couldn’t afford to pay, you payed, to the tune of up to $285.00 per family in 2014, $325.00 in 2015, and $2085.00 in 2016-2018 (Eibner & Nowak, 2018). How did that make sense? After 2018, the financial penalty mandate was eliminated due to the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017. Per the Congressional Budget office, this mandate elimination is estimated to reduce health care coverage by 3-6 million between 2019-2021 and increase the premiums on the individual market by approximately 10 percent (Eibner & Nowak, 2018). Meaning others payed to make up for the loss in penalty payments. The proposed plan of 2020 by President Trump is looking to allow pre-existing conditions to be a consideration for companies again, which will lead to yet higher premiums and higher rates of uninsured. All seems confusing with much back-and-forth.
Rising health care costs due to new technology, prescription drug costs rising, rise in chronic disease, and high administrative costs are no secret. Cost management needs to come from all angles. Yet it seems no one financially benefiting wants to take the hit. Fifty- nine percent of physician in the U.S. state they are aware their patients have difficulty paying for care services (Laff, 2015). Yet, according to Laff (2015) salary report, “salaries for family physicians rose 10 percent between 2014 and 2015, the fifth highest rate of increase for any specialty.” I would venture to say that it would be a rarity to find a worker in the medical field that would say they feel they are overpaid and willing to take a pay cut to help reduce medical costs and allow more to be insured.
With this class making me more aware of the issues and proposed plans, it surely makes me wonder if resolution is even a possibility, or if the gap will just widen as each new plan that gets put into place just gets overturned by the next in office and more people get lost in the mix.

Understanding the trends of why citizens have gaps in covered and why children are being left uninsured will hopefully have a positive outcome in future decisions regarding the system.

It is unfortunate that here in The United States, we fall so short concerning our health care system. With advancements in technology and high-tech devices for care, it may seem to some that we, as a country, are providing impeccable health care to our citizens. Providing the best innovations to patients is one thing, but not having access to them is our downfall. Despite the healthcare systems best efforts to ensure everyone has access but enacting programs like what the Affordable Care Act offers, there still were “26% of U.S. adults 19 to 64 years of age had a gap in their insurance in 2011; in 69% of those, the gap lasted longer than a year.” (Carter, 2012)
People lose their access to healthcare for many reasons. In some cases, citizens lose their employment which had previously provided their healthcare their benefits. A study published in 2017 by Nicholas A. Jolly and Brian J. Phelan, reported that an individual without children who lost their job was highly unlikely to seek alternative health insurance coverage that is no longer supplied by their previous employer. (Jolly, N. and Phelan, B., 2017). The reason being they stated is because individuals with children were more likely to be married and could seek alternative insurance through their spouse. (2017) According to the most recently available information provided by kkf.org, even here in Massachusetts, 55% of people were on employer-provided health insurance in 2018. (“Health Insurance Coverage of the Total Population”, 2020)
Another group often experiencing gaps in insurance coverage are young adults. It is said that this particular group sees the most changes in insurance eligibility or changes than anyone else. (Tilley, L. L. et al ,2018). Tilley reports the reasoning behind this instability is “due to transitions in employment, income, college status, or family structure”. (Tilley, L. L. et al ,2018) In a study done in California, many young adults would only realize they did not have health care coverage when they were denied payment coverage for a service they were seeking. (2018)
While the gaps in coverage can be explained by employment changes or the lack of health insurance literacy amongst young adults, it is young children in Florida that are found to be without insurance coverage at all. In 2018, Florida reported a 6.2% rate of children uninsured in its state. (Alker, J. and Wagnerman, K, 2018). While it was stated that this is an all-time low due to the Affordable Care Act, any number of uninsured children should be considered significant. (2018) Alker said, “research shows that expanding Medicaid under the ACA 15 for adults leads to a “welcome mat effect” for children; children were less likely to be uninsured as their parents enrolled in Medicaid through the expansion.” (2018) Increasing the parent’s health insurance literacy could improve the lack of coverage in children.

There is no doubt The United States health care system needs improvement. Understanding the trends of why citizens have gaps in covered and why children are being left uninsured will hopefully have a positive outcome in future decisions regarding the system.
